Alice Braat

Alice Braat creates her own distinctive world in which alienation and reality blend seamlessly. Her images derive their unique character from the choice of colours, surreal details and the magical realistic angle. For her series Les Creatures Vivantes she created twelve images. “I got inspired by a shop in Paris called La Maison Deyrolle, where they sell stuffed animals. For me it’s more than ’just’ a shop. When you enter this ’world’, you have the feeling that all the animals become alive when the shop is closed and everybody has left the building. In this series I depicted various live animals, realistic yet surreal. In an almost painterly fashion I create my own reality, one highly sensitive of colour and composition. Animals have played a significant role in Art History and in my work. I add to this tradition in a contemporary and personal way.”
